Exceptional & Impressive Victorian Paste Sterling Swallow Bird Brooch/Pin
Completely encrusted in crystal paste stones with a ruby paste eye, all set in solid Sterling Silver
Hallmarked with the symbol of a left-facing fish with the word “Sterling” within. At first I thought this was the hallmark for “FNCO” which also used a similar hallmark. However their hallmark is a right-facing fish symbol, and the fish is slightly different. I have not been able to figure out the maker attributed to this hallmark. From the design and construction, and findings used, it can be dated to the early 1900’s.
This is an exceptional representation of fine victorian sterling & paste that surely belonged to someone of substance who undoubtedly wore this with pride.
One of the more popular and romantic motifs in jewelry of the time, were swallow birds such as this. Swallows are known to ‘mate for life’, and represent home and heart since they always return home to their nest.
This beauty measures a whopping 4 Inches wide by 2 Inches high and weighs 35.2 grams.
Excellent condition. Paste stones are incredibly all bright and sparkly. Light patina on reverse.
