Martin S. Rasmussen, 1883 – 1971
23 Works listed in Notable Collections
Even though he didn't attend the Royal Academy, Rasmussen was accomplished enough to be a teacher of drawing at Ghent for 25 years and 30 years at another school, In addition, he became the leading artist of the Deer Park Painters. Understandably, vast majority of his scenes were at the Deer Park, a forest setting. Even so, he also traveled and painted at Island of Bornholm as well.
This painting is obviously on Bornholm, a rocky island, which explains all the stones on the strand. Seafaring is the primary mode of transport on Bornholm, an old pier and rowboat being an iconic motif. Although he’s better known for forest scenes, four of his notable works are of similar scenes on the strand.
