Harold Schiodte, Danish, 1852 - 1924
After graduating from the Royal Academy in 1879, and following his study trips to France, Belgium, and Germany, Harold specialized in figurative paintings. In particular, groups of figures participating in major life events. In this motif, a party is returning from a wedding celebration. As was often the case in Scandinavia, events were on the other side of a lake. People thought nothing of climbing in a row boat and crossing to the other side; they've been doing it their entire lives.
There's a entire cast of characters in this motif, e.g. zanny uncle from cassock country, young lovers in their finest, the matron in the front of boat, teenager dragging her hand in the water, and others.
Oil on artist board. Good condition, normal surface wear.
