Eastern Orthodox Monk in Rome, ca 1893, by Ole Pedersen 1856 - 1898
Ole Pedersen has 12 pieces in Museums and Notable Collections in his short 38 years of life. Several of which were done in 1894-94 during his stay in Italy. The "Monk in Blue" is obviously from the same period. He also managed to show at the 1889 Paris International, where he won an Honorable Mention (among world's top artists). Also represented Danish art in the Chicago World Fair of 1893, among other notable Exhibitions.
The motif is of an elderly Monk wearing a scarab around his waist, carrying a staff with plume on the end, his blue robe a sign of the religious order that he belongs to. He walks down the street of an ancient town, the dome of churches in the distance.
