I recently acquired the life work of the Boston artist Ben Black (1922-2003). This is one of his wonderful large portraits. Done in a combination of magic marker and pen and ink. His characteristic style of filling the background with a color filled backdrop covered in pen & ink cross hatching. Image measures 28 x 20 inches on Bainbridge Illustration board measuring 30 x 22 inches. Signed and dated in ink lower right. As created condition. Clean and fresh. Stunning and ready for framing.
For those not familiar with the artist, I have created a small biography based on the gallery exhibition pamphlets and newspaper articles I acquired with the collection. For a more detailed exhibition and collection list feel free to email me:
"Ben Black (1922-2003). Born in Boston, he graduated Massachusetts College of Art in 1947 after serving in World War 2. He began his career as an art director in one of Boston's leading advertising firms, later leaving to create his own studio where his works were included in The New Yorker, Saturday Evening Post, Reader's Digest and others, establishing himself as a leading American Illustrator. He had many solo and group exhibitions throughout New England and his work is collected throughout the world. Originally known for his clowns, he created a limited edition series of plates for Royal Doulton as well as clown figurines for Schmidt. He has also created numerous designs for Hallmark cards."
