This gorgeous Hermès scarf, “La Cle des Champs”, was designed by Francoise Faconnet in 1966. La cle des champs may be literally translated as "the key to the fields", but it is actually an old French expression or metaphor for "freedom", "liberty", or "to escape". The lovely birds depicted on this scarf are meant to be free to fly wherever they wish.
In a beautiful colorway of red, gold, and the browns and blues of the birds against a black ground, the scarf is printed on a lush jacquard silk fabric with a ribbon pattern. Hermès discontinued production using this woven silk fabric in the 1980s given its prohibitive labor and expense, and these scarves command a premium. A rarely seen scarf, it is in excellent vintage condition, without issue, with caretag attached.
