This is a Hobe mesh and faux pearl necklace The wide mesh chain crosses over at the top of a pearl cluster. This cluster resembles grapes hanging on a vine. I see no wear to the pearls. The clasp is hook and chain.
SIGNATURES AND MARKS: Hobe with a copyright in a cartouche.
ERA: This mark was used from 1958 to 1983.
CONDITION: Very fine pre-owned condition. I see no wear to the finish nor to the glass pearls. I have read that Hobe used an exclusive 22K electro-plating process. Their gold plating is exceptional.
SIZE: 16-1/2" long with a 3-1/2" extender. 2" long pendant. The chain is 3/8" wide.
HISTORY: The company was founded by Jacques Hobe, in 1883 in France. After WW-ll William Hobe', the son, moved the company to the U.S.A. In California he made jewelry for the Ziegfeld Follies, and catered to the Hollywood crowd. Hobe jewelry is still being made, but has nothing to do with the original family. Hobe provided jewelry to high end department stores and expensive boutiques. It was the "darling" of Hollywood starlets in the 50's.
