This is a gorgeous HUGE brooch by HOBE. It is sterling silver and set with faceted stones, a standard hallmark of early Hobe jewelry.
The stones are gorgeously brilliant.
Hobe has specialized in significantly large sterling and gold washed sterling pieces, using semi-precious stones in the 1920's - 1960's. Examples showed sapphires, spinels, zircons, amethysts, and topazes according to KOVEL'S Buyer's Guide to 20th Century Costume Jewelry.
The sterling silver has a lovely patina, which I have only given an extremely light going over.
The level of patina is such a personal thing that I am not going to polish this way up, but if you prefer a high shine this will polish beautifully.
MARKS: It is marked on the back Hobe Sterling and Design Pat. in a flower shape which differentiates it from some other similar brooches.
ERA: This Hobe mark on the back was used from 1941-1947.
SIZE: 3 1/2" by 2".
CONDITION: excellent pre-owned condition with a good secure clasp, sparkly stones and no dents.
HISTORY: The company was founded by Jacques Hobe, in 1883 in France. After WW-ll William Hobe', the son, moved the company to the U.S.A. In California he made jewelry for the Ziegfeld Follies, and catered to the Hollywood crowd. Hobe jewelry is still being made, but has nothing to do with the original family.
