A traditional, African fertility doll from the Fali people of Northern Cameroon carved of wood and strung with layers of red and yellow glass beads. In Cameroon, when a Fali man becomes engaged, he crafts a fertility figure or Ham Pilu to represent his future child. It is crafted from wood and decorated with hair, beads, and other small objects like cowrie shells and represents the gender he desires for his first born. He presents it to his future wife, who wears it in a baby carrier on her back. The woman cares for the doll until a child is born after which the doll is stored.
