A wonderful antique bucolic landscape at dusk. Featuring a vibrant transitioning sky which highlights various parts of the landscape with warm spots of light. It is contrasted by deep shadows and silhouettes in the middle ground and background, including trees and clouds. This piece depicts a wooded dirt road with wheel tracks and puddles also highlighted by the setting sun. There are two figures on horseback and one on foot with a dog, walking down the road toward the viewer.
William Manners is known for his landscapes and rural genre paintings. The Furness Countryside in northwestern England provided the subjects for many of his landscapes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists and was elected to the R.B.A. in 1893.
