Originally longer, this authentic Ningxia rug has a brilliant, natural golden yellow field with three circular paeony and leaf openwork medallions, with branches of seasonal fruits scattered about.A peach border displays a paeony and flowery arabesque pattern in the iconic Ningxia manner. A natural gold field is fairly uncommon on period Ningxia rugs, most having been faded to yellow from an orange-red tone.Although there is wear to parts of the field, the condition is acceptable for this group of genuinely antique Chinese rugs. The pile is of soft wool, lies down almost flat and is relatively sparse owing to the flat wefts of the cotton foundation.Ningxia rugs were originally aimed at a Chinese elite in the 17th to 19th centuries who used them sparingly. This short, narrow runner still looks great with classical Chinese furniture, but the bright yellow adds an eye-catching colour accent to any room. The end borders are reconstructions,as is common with such pieces which were originally much longer and have been divided into more usable rugs.Sometimes up to 30 ft. length, they were originally made for use in Buddhist monasteries. The ends were rewoven when the runner was divided in China to make complete shorter pieces. The sides are original and there is no reknoting to the field. For further information please email us or call us at 212-268-5876.
