What a lucky rug ! The shou symbols of the border along with the paired bats are Chinese good luck devices. The fretwork in the main border with its dragon heads traces back to 17th century rug examples and further in other media to ancient times. The navy blue field has a two way pattern of paeony arabesques converging on an otherwise open center.Colourful clouds ornament the inner guard. There are three shades of blue along with beige and ivory. There is slight pattern carving to set off the outlines of the motives.Oval and round rugs were common in the 1920's,but this is clearly one of the best with a crisp pattern and a wide colour scheme. The iconography is classic and totally Chinese.
The condition is excellent with a high pile of handspun wool on an all cotton foundation. There are no low or worn areas. This pattern on an oval Chinese is very rare,if not unique.
This rug has been cleaned professionally and is free of any stains or odors. For further information please email us or call us at 212-268-5876.
