The design of this Art Deco rug has been adapted from screen panels, thus accounting for the small upper section with a floral pattern.Below is a larger pictorial image of a dragon rising in clouds above stylized waves and mountains. The wave convention of rainbow bands topped by frothy surf, appears on Chinese rugs of all types,as well as on silk textiles,at least as far back as the 16th century. The scaly dragon is more benevolent and benign rather than fierce. The red ground recalls carved red cinnabar lacquer vessels and panels.
The foundation is all cotton with asymmetric knots. The weave is compact and solid. The condition is very good and there are no lowish areas.
The style is definitely Chinese, with no abstract or geometric elements, but it works well in both oriental or modern decors. This Chinese rug has been cleaned professionally and is totally free of odors or stains. For further information please email us or call us at 212-268-5876.
