Oversize for a prayer rug, this SW Caucasian rug floats a faceted niche arch above a central square panel, all on a red ground. The old gold herringbone design border usually accompanies,as here, the field pattern. There are at least 4 blues, all derived from indigo,as well as three reds from madder.
The pile is low,but even, and there have been a few spot repairs. The selvage has been replaced. The pattern is wholly abstract in the Caucasian manner with rosettes, lozenges, volute knots, triangles, hooks and stars among the secondary elements.Interestingly this rug has far more than the usual 7 tones of a Kazak, thus making a tentative attribution to Karabagh with a wider dye palette a distinct possibility.
This Piece has been cleaned professionally and is free of any stains or odors. For more information please email us or call us at 212-268-5876
