For sale is a utilitarian piece of art glass made by The Steuben Glass Company of Corning, New York. The item is a "under plate" and it is done in the Gold Aurene on Calcite style of art glass. This was of Frederick Carder's best selling glass. This plate measures 5 13/16" in diameter and is 1 1/16" tall. The well of the plate is 2 3/4" in diameter for the sherbet cup to fit into.
The plate displays a brilliant Gold Aurene iridescence on the upper or face side. The underneath has a calcite whit cased glass to give the plate its opacity. Looking inside the plate you can see beautiful hues of fuchsia, and some blues. The underside bottom is flat and sits evenly.
This under plate is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. There are a few minor scratches on the bottom of the under plate and is typical of normal age wear. This under plate is not signed as was typical of this Utilitarian Line by Steuben. They probable had paper labels at one time. This plate has no pontil scar on the bottom and is flat to the touch. I believe this to be the under plate to shape number 2680 in the Steuben catalog of shapes.
Steuben Aurene glass is some the highest quality glass you can own. At the turn of the century LCT Tiffany Studio's Favrile line was their main competitor and their fared equally as well, creating some of the nicest art glass vases the world has ever seen. Steuben under plates are somewhat hard to find without damage. These items were used and many of them did not survive.
Those of you who collect Gold Aurene on Calcite and want an excellent example do not let this one pass you by!! This piece was early in Steuben's production as it was made, circa 1905-1915.
