For sale is a wonderful arts and crafts shaped vessel made by The Grueby Pottery Company of Boston, Ma. The vase has "vertically modeled or tooled leaves" and it is done in a wonderful Grueby matte green glaze. The vase is a nice size and it has a unique shape. It stands just shy of 6 11/16" tall and has a diameter of 4 3/16" at the top portion of the vase. The foot has a diameter of 3 3/4".
The vase is considered to be a rare form in this unique shape with such tall modeled leaves. This Grueby vase displays a waxy leathery matte green glaze. The bottom half of this vase has narrow vertically carved leaves with a center vein. The upper portion has much wider overlapping carved and tooled leaves with a more detailed center vein. There is also a slight curl to the top center portion of each leaf. This form is quite rare from Grueby as I have not seen another one through the years.
The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips or any dings. I have checked all the high spots and I only felt one leaf in the upper section that was a little bit rough on the side of one leaf. There is crazing on the inside of the vase. The vase is signed on the bottom with the very early circular impressed mark which reads "GRUEBY FAIENCE Co BOSTON USA" with a lotus leaf in the middle. It also carries the artist initial of a capital incised "LM". I do not know who these initials stand for. I could not identify the artist from my Grueby Pottery reference books. The impressed Grueby mark is an early mark and I would say that this vase was made circa 1904-1907.
This is wonderful piece of art pottery is done in a beautiful Grueby green glaze with nicely carved and tooled leaves. I'm quite sure the buyer will be very pleased with their purchase. This is truly a rare example to add to one's advanced Grueby Pottery collection.
