For sale is a very nice art glass centerpiece vase made by Franz Welz of Bohemia which is now the modern day "Czech Republic". I would call this a "Squat Centerpiece Vase with Ormula" and it somewhat resembles a "Snake Basket". The vase has some size to it as it stands 4 3/8" tall and is 8" in diameter. The top opening has an outside diameter of 3 3/16".
The vase has a squat shape that resembles a flying saucer or a Cobra Snake Basket. I would call the decor "Red Marbleized". The vase displays a rich deep blood red background glass with blue to gray marbleizing. This is cased in clear glass and the vase also displays an iridescent sheen to the outside surface. The neck of the vase rises above the body like the top of a volcano. It is further embellished with a bronze ormula covering the neck. The pattern is arts and crafts in style.
The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The vase seems to have seen very little use as there is no calcium deposits on the inside. There is minor wear on the ormula on one side. The piece is signed "Loetz Austria" and it has a polished counter sunk pontil. The sign of a quality piece of art glass.
I would attribute this vase to have been made by Franz Welz because of the glass composition. I also had this confirmed by the folks building the new Kralik and Rindskopf web site. He was granted a patent for this type of glass in 1892. There is a similar style of glass sitting on a shelf in the Passau Museum in Germany. It is possible that he blew this form exclusively for Loetz as the signature cipher is quite small and hard to see and it appears to be correct. This piece of art glass is very early as it was made, Circa 1892-1905.
