Here are a pair of miniature antique, cast iron sad irons manufactured by the Dover Sad Iron Company of Dover Ohio. They are cast iron weighing about 1+ lbs each, one has a red wooden handle and the other green. The top sections are removable. I am told that these sad iron were often sold in pairs so that the user can always have one heating while the other is in use. Both irons are stamped on the lower cast iron section with the wording “DOVER Made in USA Dolly Iron”. They measures 3 5/8" in length, 2 1/2" high, and 1 3/4" wide at the widest point on the sad iron. Miniature irons were used for pressing lace and sleeves but these are probably toy irons that were intended for children to iron doll clothes. Dover Ohio on the Erie and Ohio canal was once the home of large iron and steel manufacturing mills and the area was know as the “Iron Valley”.
