This is a hundred year old two piece sad iron. The top section is labeled with a patent date of 1900. The bottom section is solid iron and labeled as “AsBESTos”. These type of irons were used to iron sleeves and often called flounce irons. Length is 7 inches and weight is about 10 lbs.
The irons may say "Asbestos" but the asbestos was actually in the cover/handle that goes over the iron. These were much cooler for the person doing the ironing. There was also a bit of air space between the iron and the cover to help keep it cool. This brand flourished just before electric irons helped bring cooler, less fatiguing ironing days. The main selling point was the cool handle on a hot iron. 19
