14K Carnelian Intaglio Conversion Necklace - Elephant and Castle14K Carnelian Intaglio Conversion Necklace - Elephant and Castle

The elephant is a symbol of strength and power and it is said that if the trunk points upwards, this holds in the luck, making this a wonderful talisman. This necklace has been crafted using a carnelian wax seal from the Victorian era. The seal is bezel set in 14 karat yellow gold and suspended by a 14 karat gold chain.

The elephant depicted is likely related to The Worshipful Company of Cutlers. The Cutlers’ Company, a London craft guild founded in the 13th century represented workers who made knives, scissors, surgical instruments and the like. The guild used a similar emblem. The elephant used could relate to the elephant ivory used for knife handles, in which the company dealt.

It is also possible that there is some relation to the Elephant and Castle district in south London. This is an important road junction since at least the eighteenth century. Its name derives from the sign of a public house in the area, which shows an elephant surmounted by a castle.
