This incredible micro mosaic dates to around 18550, during the height of micro mosaic popularity. The tiny glass bricks (or tesserae) in this micro mosaic are extremely small, making a piece like this a laborious and painstaking process. Each piece would have been positioned into the malachite surround using tiny tweezers. The mosaic is mounted in a lovely 14 karat gold frame with deeply chased flowers.

Micromosaic jewelry was popular during the early to mid-19th century. Wealthy families would travel around Europe on Grand Tour to visit various landmarks and museums to experience different European cultures. They would acquire small souvenirs like this along the way. Italy was a popular destination and Rome was known for their glass production. Italian workshops quickly turned their glass making skills to making micro mosaic artwork for the tourists.

Condition notes: This piece is in very good condition but with a loupe you can see that 2 - 3 tesserae are missing. There is some minor edge roughness to the malachite surround. The pin stem is not gold and is likely a replacement.
