A nice pair of Mason's Ironstone Japan Pattern Soup Bowls. These bowls measure 9 1/2 inches in diameter and are about 1 3/4 inches deep. They are transfer printed in underglaze blues and hand decorated overglaze with Imari Red. They are marked with both the blue printed crown mark and the impressed "Mason's Patented Ironstone China" mark of the pottery of the brothers George Miles and Charles James Mason, Staffordshire. The impressed mark was used from 1813 to 1825 and the printed mark from 1820. The bowls are in excellent condition for their age with only minor loss to overglaze color. There are a few small underglaze chips in the rim of one that occurred in manufacturing. These can be seen in the seventh and eighth pictures. A very nice pair of almost 200 year old soup bowls by the family that originated Ironstone China.
