This Chinese bowl is a bit of a mystery. Decorated with underglaze blue sprays of leaves and then finished with overglaze red and gilt, we are classing it as "doucai" in the sense of "opposing colors" or, as in the Jingdezhen local usage, to describe pieces that have both underglaze and overglaze decoration. We considered also that the bowl might be considered "clobbered" or shipped to be finish-decorated in Europe, but in the end rejected that. From the paste and glaze, we are judging this to be Kangxi period.
Size: approx 5 5/8" diameter; 2 3/8" high. Condition: Remains of price sticker; Long stable crack; Nice genuine wear; Some rim frits. Otherwise, no damage, restoration or repair that we can spot.
