Here is another lovely vintage Chinese New Year's print, or "nianhua" with a large "FU" wishing good luck and good fortune to the household. Folded in regular creases, it was most likely collected to send back the US -- possibly to raise money for missionary work, or as part of a collection.
Location of the workshop is probably Shandong province or possibly Shanghai.
Size: 21 3/4" x 12". Condition: some short tearing along the creases and on edges. Generally good condition.
The nianhua prints were designed to be ephemeral; most were destroyed in the year following their use and many of the remaining ones fell prey to the uncertainties of China during the 20th Century, particularly during WWII, so to find vintage examples in good condition is very rare.
