A fine vintage close copy of a famous Song Dynasty painting in the Palace Museum Beijing collections, this delicious almost circular image depicts a bird balancing on a knotweed stem over water.
From the mount and the workmanship, we estimate this to be Republic in date, but it could be early fifties, and the mount could well be later than the image. The mount is certainly no later than the early 1950's. The silk of the image is consistent with a 1920's/early 1930's date, but of course, the silk could always be older than the painting. Dating aside, this is a lovely rendering of an earlier and famous painting which places it firmly in the Chinese tradition of honoring the past by reproducing the best in the present.
