This is a most unusual small bottle, probably used for baijiu and constructed of a finely levigated buff paste with a chocolate brown glaze and applied character "Ren" meaning Benenvolence or Kindness. Which is a lovely thought for the effects of baijiu wine. Interior unglazed.
The dating presented us with a quandary, but we finally fell into a discussion amongst Chinese ceramic experts dealing with an almost identical bottle with an applied 王 character and the conclusion was that it was certainly North China, most likely from a Henan kiln and more likely to be of Ming/Qing date than earlier (which had been the initial thought).
Height: approx 5"; diameter approx 6 1/4". Condition: Crack through which contents have seeped in the past (please see photos). Otherwise natural wear.
Altogether a lovely study piece.
