This is a very fine ink and color on paper hanging scroll signed 琴石 and bearing seals of Mori Kinseki (1843 - 1921). The inscription dates it to the 1st lunar month of 1883 on the 9th (?) day.
Mori Kinseki was a leading proponent of the Nanga (南画), or "literati", school of panting in Osaka in the late Edo period. The Nanga school owed much to the Chinese literati tradition and this work with the pair of cranes and the pine demonstrates that influence combined with the Western-style training that Kinseki also received after 1863.
Ink & color on paper mounted with cloth. Size approx: 75" x 25" scroll; 53" x 20" (134 x 50cms) image.
Condition: Overall in very nice antique condition. Some minor discoloration and the usual creasing. Two visible age spots (see photos). Image is lifting slightly from mount at top right & top left. Please email with any condition questions.
