This is set of two vintage aquarelle prints of young ballerinas performing dance exercises. They originally appeared as story illustrations for a special feature in a 1937 French periodical, L’Illustration. They are illustrated by José Simont who was one of the leading illustrators in Europe between 1900-1944. Simon was born in Spain but moved to Paris at the age of 23 when the 1900 World Exposition invited him to showcase his drawings. He went on to work for L’Illustration, the Illustrated London News, and he American Collier’s Magazine where he earned a noteworthy salary of $10,000 in 1921!!!! This pair of prints is a perfect gift for the young dancer, the prima ballerina to be. It is a showcase of grace for the developing performer. Each print is 6 ½ x 9 1/4 inches in size. Each is signed by the artist. Original to 1937 and NOT recent reproductions. A+ condition. They each come custom matted in a neutral 16 x 20 inch mat which works perfectly in standard size frames.
