Unger Brothers of Newark, New Jersey, sterling silver matchsafe, or vesta. The design motif is of a mythological batwoman sporting a pair of horns, pointed ears and a spectacular pair of wings. The bat woman is scantily clad, rather racy for the time that this matchsafe was made, circa 1890s. But, since it was usually kept out of site in owner's pocket, it was a little titillating inside secret, maybe to be shared with close friends.
The matchsafe has no decoration nor engraving nor monogramming on the reverse. There is a match striker on the bottom of the matchsafe. The hinge is in great working antique condition. and this matchsafe shows minor age appropriate wear.
This matchsafe is fully marked with the "UB" Unger Brothers logo and the usual STERLING 925 FINE. The matchsafe is approximately 2 1/4 inches by 1 1/2 inches.
Unger Brothers was out of the silver business around 1913.
