Being offered is a mid century modern sterling silver and melamine piggy bank made by the Towle Silversmiths of Newburyport, MA. The piggy body is made of a gray melamine with a wide central band of sterling silver. The piggy is approximately 6 inches overall in length and is about 3 3/4 inches tall, standing on it's four melamine legs. The piggy also has a sterling curly tail.
The mouth has a coin slot in it for accepting coin and bills. The center of the piggy twist open bayonet style notch that is partly sterling and the other half is melamine that allows the treasure inside to be retrieved. Until I acquired this piggy bank, I had thought that Towle only made this bank in black melamine and sterling. This bank being made of gray melamine seems to be almost unique. This piggy bank is circa 1950s - 1960s, making this truly a rare mid century modern collectible.
