This Alexandrite Cats-Eye is one of the rarest gems of all, combining three distinctly different optical effects in one gem, Color Change, Chatoyance, and Milk and Honey Effect. Alexandrite and Cat's Eye are each varieties of the mineral Chrysoberyl that show unique optical phenomena-- Alexandrite shows color change, Cat's Eye shows a bright line of light plus Milk and Honey. Here we see all these effects in one gem. Rare and unique!
This Alexandrite exhibits a moderate "Color Change" from Medium Bluish Purple in incandescent lighting to Medium Bluish Green in daylight. The color change comes from strong absorption of light in the the orange to yellow portion of the visible spectrum, caused by impurities of chromium within the crystal structure.
The Cat's Eye in this gem is perfectly oriented, complete, straight and bright. Cat's Eye is a band of reflected light moves just beneath the surface of a cabochon cut gemstone. The phenomenon is known as "Chatoyance". This narrow band of concentrated light is caused by inclusions of fine, slender parallel mineral fibers that reflect light into a single band.
This gem exhibits a strong and complete "Milk and Honey effect." As you rotate the gem, the "eye" will open into two separate bands, and the side opposite the light source will appear lighter, so that half the gem is light colored, the opposite is dark.
