George Washington Hand Embroidered Tapestry c.1850s
Finely hand embroidered tapestry of George Washington. Though completely hand made, this was created in an industry setting, as other examples have appeared on the market in smaller sizes over the last few decades. The most notable example is a book titled "Threads & History" by the curator of political history at the Smithsonian.
Here we have George Washington standing in full profile as a statesman. Created in wool and silk on a linen background.
The textile shows a significant amount of fading and distress, though the overall impression is that of a fine old antique that will look great. This shows no sign of past repairs or added dye. All original condition with flaws that are consistent with 170 years of being passed down from one generation to the next.
The buckles on his feet show glass bead work. The back of the tapestry shows the loose threads of the fine needlework.
This will look great once framed and properly displayed. This is clearly an antique piece that shows it's age, but the overall charm, subject matter and quality of the embroidery make this very desirable.
Dimensions 36" wide x 47" tall. Please see all images for an idea of the true condition.
