Winged Fairy Victorian Sewing Vise/Clamp
This sewing vise/clamp, also know as a 3rd hand, is a lovely example of Victorian embellishment of a sensible or practical purposed tool. The fairy kneels on a clam shaped cushion with tassels. His extended hands hold a tray with a central spike, perhaps for a spool of thread or it may be missing a pincushion. The clam shell opens with the aid of a clover shaped screw to hold needle or pins and the fairy’s leg lifts giving fabric tension for sewing or embroidery. About 8” in length- perhaps a bit longer with the European, French?, key shaped end fully extended and about 2 1/2” wide.
I purchased this years ago along with a Palais Royale Sewing box and am starting to let go of my more precious items. I can guarantee this will be the envy of any Sewing “bird” collection. In overall excellent condition but the clover screw can be hard to get seated. I sprayed it with WD40 to make everything work smoothly so there may be some shiny surfaces in the photos.
