Chinese red cinnabar antique lacquer box. A carved wooden box with a red lacquer finish from China circa 1850-1900s. It is a lovely deep aged vibrant red cinnabar round lidded box with intricate carvings throughout. Some of the features of the carvings on the top are bridges, pagodas, temples, three men, a river and fauna as well as along the sides fine details of flowers and scroll design work. This old deep red color is only found in the boxes that are many many years old. Black lacquered interior.
Boxes like this were frequently painted with a lacquer containing a cinnabar pigment. Cinnabar has been used for thousands of years as a coloring agent because of its intense red-orange color. This one is laquered over timber.
What makes this item most desirable is its size, which is much larger than the usual small trinket size cinnabar pieces available. It measures 17 inches in circumference, 3.5 inches tall and 4.25 inches across the base.
BONUS coming with the box is an old insert. We believe a soapstone carved insert, comes with metal ring and paper backing. It was found inside the box. It is reticulated translucent very pale celadon carved stone, done in a floral pattern.
NOTE: As with all our antique vintage items we do not clean or polish, we leave that to the new owners. This one is no exception. Due to the many crevices and intricate carvings this one does have some dust. PLEASE see photos as they are part of our description. As expected on our items that are over a 100 years old there is vintage wear present. There is nothing structurally wrong with this box. No Cracks or breaks. Present is age crackling in the black laquer and some wear on edges. (SEE Photos) Please ask any questions as we are happy to answer.
