An English Motto Ware Inkwell from Torquay, a seaside town in Devon. Its design indicates that it was most likely made in the 1920's or 1930's for the tourist trade, Torquay being a popular tourist destination and sometimes known as the English Riviera. It was made using traditional red Devon clay then slip dipped and given a clear glaze. There is a charming Sgraffito motto which reads: "Us be always glad tu yer from 'ee" which means "We are always glad to hear from you"...so appropriate for an inkwell. It measures 2.75" in diameter by 2.75" tall. Impressed on the underside is ALLER VALE and ENGLAND and scratched by hand the number 1361 N.1. This inkwell was probably made no later than 1932 when the company ceased to be known as ALLER VALE.
CONDITION: The owner of this charming inkwell took its motto to heart...there is some wear on the knob of the cap and there are ink stains on the underside of the cap as well as around the edge of the mouth of the inkwell. "It is not just a pretty face". There is a tiny flake chip on the very edge of the cap though that spot is shiny as if glazed which seems to indicate that a small indentation may have occurred during production before being glazed. All in all it is in good condition.
