This is a very rare genuine natural untreated carved coral station necklace with very large beads. Having collected coral for over 30 years, this piece is coming from my personal collection. Just finding a single bead such as one of these corals let alone in this quality is extremely difficult to find. I would date this piece most likely to the 1980's possibly earlier based on the style of the chain in this piece.
The necklace is quite long at just under 25 inches making this piece quite difficult to photo yet still get the detail. This is a continuous necklace that slips over your head, no clasp. Though you usually only see this done in the longer necklaces, I found it to be quite nice as it insures you do not drop it while trying to get the clasp shut Which is not always easy to do without help.
An older piece on a 14k tested and confirmed unmarked chain with unusual links that are very sturdy. The gold wire which is also 14k yellow gold (which goes through beads and connects to chain as do all station necklaces.) The necklace is heavy at 55.5 grams and the beads are large. The layout and design is stunning and also versatile. The space between the corals is in a pattern. Some longer lengths so shorter lengths. Then.... Then almost like a puzzle if you turn the beads until one of the barrel beads is front and center ( there is only one of them that then lines the necklace up in perfect symmetry). If that is not enough if you flip it making this bead the dead center back of the necklace then two of the carved melon beads are perfectly centered in the front with even space between them leaving you an area for an enhancer.
My personal preference is this piece just as it is but it is nice to have options. I am not a petit woman (5'10" tall) with what I would think an average size head for my stature and the piece goes over my head easily. If you prefer to have a clasp added a jewelry should be able to add one quite easily.
The 5 carved Shou dragon beads measure an average of 16.5 mm long by 14mm thick and the melon beads at an average of 13mm in size. The carving on the melon balls is also of very high quality. Deep, smooth, and gently curving around he coral creating a slight S curve pattern which could not have been easy to make so uniform.
The photos just do not do justice to this rare and beautiful necklace. Very nice condition, well loved and cared for by both myself and previous owners.
