Truly a stunning pair of natural coral earrings. I have collected coral for over 30 years and this is a pair of unworn old stock earrings most likely from the early 1970's. Years ago I was able to obtain many pieces of new old stock that were never worn of of which I have been hoarding in my collection.
The color of this coral is considered to be in the red family. It is a very very deep salmon, actually in the red family. It nears oxblood coral but is not as translucent or glassy as oxblood. I have shown the pair of earrings on true red paper so you may view the actual color of this coral which could best be described a a very dark salmon dusty rosy red if that makes any sense. I believe this to be Momo coral. You see this Momo coral most often in the old intricately carved coral pieces. This is the only pair of drop coral earrings I have in this color. All natural, genuine and untreated.
Though they are screw backs they fit snugly and mechanisms work perfectly. The back of the screw nut is marked 14k and photographed though a bit blurry in photo. All gold has been tested and verified as 14k and the gold is yellow gold. I personally love the display of this type of coral with some white areas appearing. It not only is a guarantee it is natural, I just think it is beautiful. These are quite large drops.
Total length measures 46mm so just under 2 inches. The round top bead is 6.65mm with the actual coral drop part measuring 28mm long by 7mm wide. They are teardrop and are not flat on the back.
Earrings such as these are nearly impossible to find these days. These could very easily be converted to post pierced earrings. A jeweler could easily cut at the mount of the coral ball on the back then put a post where there is a gold back at the coral ball. There is weight to the gold that would be removed and most jewelers would put this gold towards the price of modifying them. I have had many pairs converted this way in the past.
There is a faint crack line which runs down the back of one of the earrings. You do have to look closely and in the right light to see it. This is in the back and does not show when worn. If you look at the second to last photo, it is highly magnified and I was able to capture in this photo. This is not uncommon, it is in the very back center of the earring and does not compromise the drop. This was considered And they were priced accordingly for this.
As I stated above, these earrings have never been worn. I have finally decided to slowly sell off part of my cherished coral collection. Weight of the pair is 5.4 grams. Happy shopping
