This sterling match safe by Howard Sterling Co. is in very good condition. There are no dings or dents just light wear as expected for an item over 120 years old. There appears to be a new spring and the lid snaps shut but catches at the last little bit as shown in the last picture but can be pushed closed as the first picture shows.. This piece is monogrammed with a very fancy script monogram that appears to be VTBC (not exactly sure) and the date Sept. 1888. The bezel is marked on the one side with the number 48 and the other side is stamped sterling, the Howard hallmark, and what looks like 5488. This piece measures 2 3/8' by 1 3/8" and weighs 25.7 grams.
