Presented here is a beautiful set of Zuni "Sun Face" jewelry consisting of a 26 inch long Naja necklace, a bracelet, a ring, and a pair of earrings. The necklace is a double strand 6 mm sterling silver bench bead piece with 12 sun faces that measure 1 inch in diameter each. The center of the necklace is a 2 inch by 2 inch Naja set with a 1 & 1/4 inch sun face in full plains chief headdress. The sun face motif pieces are channel inlay work using a blush pale pink mother of pearl, a white mother of pearl, black onyx, red coral, and natural turquoise.
The workmanship is very good. The Naja and bracelet have makers marks "A. Gasper" for Ashbarry A. Gasper.
He is a highly collectible Zuni jewelry designer and inlay master. This "sun face design was a popular one for him. This necklace, bracelet, ring, and earring set was kept under appropriate jewelry collection conditions.
The bracelet shows more oxidation on the inside of the piece than the other items in the set. It measures 5 inches around with a 2-inch opening. it fits up to a 7 & 1/2 inch wrist. It may have been worn. It remains in good vintage condition.
The ring is a size 8 & 1/2 and looks as though it has never been worn. The earrings have posts for pierced ears. The pair is in like-new condition as well.
The sun faces on all the pieces in the set are in good condition without chips or scratches. a few of the edges of the blush pale pink mother of pearl inlay have space between them and the sterling silver channel setting. This is normal and subject to the hand made inlay process. Overall this Vintage set of handmade jewelry is in above average condition for its age. It is clean with a natural patina from age. The necklace weighs 98 grams and the bracelet weighs 22 grams. The photography lights and the camera flash reflections appear as flaws to the sun face design pieces. This is not the case. The apparent marks are due to the light reflection.
This is a stunning set of wearable art, highly collectible, and credible addition to any collection of American Southwest style and history.
