Estate jewelry: Vintage Margaret Thurman original design for her "Echo the Dreamer" jewelry studio, Saks Fifth Avenue store purchase,
Provenance: same owner since mid-1990s
Presented for your consideration an original necklace design by Margaret Thurman for her iconic jewelry studio "Echo the Dreamer" that she founded in 1993. The necklace was sold by Saks Fifth Avenue's fine jewelry department between 1994 and 1995. This offering includes the exclusive velvet jewelry box the necklace was sold in. The 20-inch long piece is signed "The Dreamer" and stamped sterling for its precious metal content. Margaret Thurman was an important jewelry designer at the end of the 20th century and a major influence on generations of jewelers. The studio she founded with her family in New York City is still a contender in current jewelry markets.
This necklace is made with valuable American "spider web" Turquoise. The large Turquoise nuggets and cabochons and their high-quality grade are not available to jewelers in today's market. The American Turquoise mines have been closing since the mid-1970s. American Turquoise is being sold on the market by the gram. This 20-inch necklace weighs 12 oz or about 330 grams. A good portion of that weight is in the high-grade American Turquoise. The center cabochon is the largest one and measures 3 1/2 inches in length and 1 3/4 inches in width. It is an irregular-shaped oval with two additional ovals on either side that are exponentially smaller in size.
Two hand-made sterling silver decorative cones end the necklace with a large sterling silver lobster claw clasp for security when worn.
There are two handmade sterling silver beads joining the nugget necklace with the cabochons at the center of the designer piece.
This necklace will make an important addition to a serious American Tourquoise jewelry collection!
