Sky blue Kingman turquoise beads and contemporary hand made sterling silver bench beads are strung together here on jewelers wire to make this stunning 14 1/2 inch choker necklace.
The necklace is secured with a beautiful hand made sterling silver round box clasp that has a semi round 9 mm Kingman turquoise cabochon bezel set on the top. The base of the sterling silver clasp measures 18 mm round and 5 mm high. The top of the clasp is decorated with a moon motif around the turquoise gem.
There are 20 hand made sterling silver bench beads strung among the turquoise beads in this piece. The bench beads measure 7 to 8 mm each and are made using the traditional Native American method and design.
The turquoise beads used to make this necklace are graduated in size from 6 to 12 mm and are irregular natural shapes. They are the legendary "Sky Blue" turquoise gems the Kingman mine in Arizona is known for. The Mineral Park mine (Kingman Turquoise mine) is located 14 miles north west of Kingman Arizona, USA. The mine has been producing gem quality turquoise, in many colors, for over 1000 years. It was originally discovered by prehistoric inhabitants of the area who used the turquoise to make jewelry and other artifacts.
This necklace represents a modern expression of a traditional South West jewelry design. It is 14 1/2 inches long and weigh 30 grams.
