An Elegant Victorian 12k Gold 1.30 Ct. Diamond & Onyx Mourning Brooch/Pendant w/Matching Earrings in Very Good Condition
This is a very fine and lovely example of Victorian jewelry. The brooch/pendant features a 1 1/3 ct European Cut Diamond surrounded by a round onyx bezel, 24 triangle shaped pieces of onyx (each with a beaded gold edge) in two levels and 24 gold beads. The outer edge of the brooch/pendant includes 11 gold beads. It appears that the piece has been altered at some point. A 14k gold hoop, on a swivel, hangs from one end where it probably attached to another piece of jewelry. There are two small gold hoops at the top (apparently for a chain). The pin clasp has been moved (the previous location for the clasp is evident by the lead solder mark). The pin is on a sturdy swivel with a screw on stabilizer.
The piece is engraved '1869' on the back. The 1 1/3 ct European Cut diamond is estimated at I-J color and VS clarity. A beautiful and very lively diamond. We grade to GIA standards.
The brooch weighs 11.2 grams. The measurements are 34 mm across and 8 mm deep. The piece can be worn as a brooch or a pendant.
The matching earrings are composed of onyx and 12k gold and are screw-backs. The round onyx in the center measures 6.5 mm and is surrounded by 10 triangle shaped onyx all set in 12k beaded gold edges. There are three onyx pieces dangling from each earring. The longest measures 13 mm in length. 19 gold beads on each earring. The earrings weigh 9.1 grams and measure 18 mm in diameter and 35 mm from top to bottom of longest dangling onyx piece.
***The gold has been acid tested and holds up to 12k purity.
A major auction house in Boston estimated a selling range between $9,000-$14,000 for these items at auction. They were particularly impressed with the workmanship and condition.
