Victorian Pinchbeck Locket Pendant on a Link Chain, England, 19th century.

The necklace is made of pinchbeck (see below) with a massive link chain and a large oval locket.

The locket is hung on a decorated large bale.

It is fully ornamented with a front shield showing a lion crest over yellow enamel background.

The back of the locket is decorated with scrolled pattern engravings.

The locket opens on a hinge revealing two old family photos.

Chain length: 48cm / 18.9in.

Pendant: 5.5cm X 4cm / 2.16 X 1.57in.

Weight: 84.35gr / 2.71oz.

Very good condition.

Pinchbeck: An alloy of Zinc and Copper that looks like gold, invented by Christopher Pinchbeck a well known clockmaker born in London in the early eighteenth century. Jewelers in the nineteenth century used this alloy as a less expensive alternative to gold.
