Here is a rarely available 72 piece service of 22-karat gilded service from Minton, Stoke-on Trent, England. The set contains double dinner plates, salad or dessert plates, bread plates, and teacups with saucers. This Minton pattern, called Argyle or Skye Island was so popular that it was in production from 1944 until Minton ceased gold encrusted production some time in the 1980s. Nevertheless it is difficult to find pieces other than dinner plates in this pattern.
The plates feature 6 large rectangular panels containing a neoclassical style ornament composed of a three flower heads and leaves, these panels are separated by 6 smaller panels that contain a single elongated flower head. The plate well is surrounded by a coordinating band of quartrefoil flower heads. All this design is rendered in 22-karat raised paste gold, and 22-karat acid etched gold bands surround the panels, plate well and plate rim.
