This is an exquisite and unusual antique 9ct gold 'jadeite' sword brooch. The brooch is highly ornate, exhibiting 'twist gold wire-work, embossed engraving to the handle with bobble and foliate decoration'. The blade of the sword is composed of jadeite gemstone which is in pristine condition all the way along its length. There are 2 gold sleeves holding the blade intact and the length of the sword is 84.0mm. There is a strong steel pin to its reverse with a '9ct' stamp mark, along with the maker's name, to the reverse side of the handle. Weighs 4.2 grams. The brooch is in excellent condition throughout, genuine jadeite gemstone and without repair -- a lovely item of fine antique jewellery.
*Jadeite is the most precious type of jade; a green sodium aluminium silicate, NaAlSi2O6. It is derived (via French: l'ejade ) which means "stone of the side". It was believed to cure kidney stones if it was rubbed against the side of the afflicted person's body.
