Once gracing the head of a large statue of the Virgin Mary, this breathtaking crown presents stars and flowers radiating upward to heaven! This is an authentic antique, purchased from a private collection in Paris. It dates towards 1880. (We picture this with a book, we sell the crown only, the book is for size reference).
The long lines of the stars and flowers give the crown additional height when viewed from below (as it was meant to be seen). It is of gilded brass and metal and is heavy for it's size. The body consists of alternating bursting stars and standing flowers. The stem of each of the twelve stars (twelve is one of the 'perfect' numbers, representing the Divine Mother) is embellished with six clear bezel set paste stones. The stars are six sided with a central ruby red (bezel set) paste stone. The flowers stand on very detailed stems with leaves. They have life-like petals with centers of ruby red (bezel set) paste stones. The cisele (hand cut) band at the bottom (1/2" wide) has a cut-work design of small flowers. There are twelve gilded brass flowers placed on top of the band, each with a ruby red (bezel set) paste stone center. Between each flower and star stem is a large (bezel set) clear paste stones.
This example has an elaborate amount of 120 paste stone embellishment. The band has five slots for adjusting the diameter of the crown at the back, from 4" down to 3 1/2". It stands 2 3/4" tall. The flowers and stars have a curve upward which gives the illusion of extra height. The crown is in excellent antique condition with no missing stones and wonderfully brilliant patina.
This is a fine example of a Santos crown.
