A charming very small sacred heart ex voto, it measures only 1 3/4" tall. It originates from France and dates towards 1880.
Only France produced the beautiful gilded brass sacred heart ex voto box. The votos and milagros of Spain and Italy are flat and of silver. The French reliquary ex voto sacred heart was made with a space for placing a hand written intention or prayer. They were often given in thanksgiving to the local parish where they were placed in adornment around the statue of the Virgin Mary.
This gilded brass sacred heart is beautifully engraved central "M" with a cross rising from the center. Engraved palm fronds and lilies flank the initial. The flame is deeply grooved. There is a ring at the back for threading a chain or ribbon. The heart opens to reveal a glowing gilded interior.
The total measurements are: 1 3/4" tall, 1" wide and 1/2" from the tabletop. It is in very good antique condition: the door works properly and it retains the original glorious patina.
It is the perfect size to wear on a chain or to hold in the palm of your hand to use in personal devotion. It is a sacred piece of religious history specific to late 19th century France.
