A shimmering beauty in precious silver with gilt over silver (vermeil) interior, this sacred heart is a precious example of religious history. It originates from a private French collection towards the Pyrenees and dates towards 1880.
This is a fine quality ex voto which would have been the work of a master silver atelier. It would have been a custom order (it would have been expensive to purchase) from a wealthy parishioner. There are three hallmarks on the side, the sanglier silver mark, the diamond shaped maker's mark and the word "depose" (patent mark). The face of the sacred heart is entirely filled by delicate engraving. The palm fronds are engraved with tiny hand tooled marks which give a defined texture and also allow reflection of light to create a two-toned effect to the front. The central initial is large with a rising, radiating cross at the center. The flame is large and deeply grooved. The back has a large ring mount with a ring threaded through to hold a ribbon or chain. The interior has a gilt overlay which is known as vermeil.
The ex voto sacred heart measures: 4 1/8" x 2 1/4" x 1" thick. The width when open is 4" across. It is in exceptional condition for it's age. There is a tiny bit of tarnish on the back; we chose to leave it with the originally found history. It opens and closes properly, the patina is extraordinary.
Fine quality silver ex votos have virtually disappeared from today's market. This is a marvelous and rarely found example which has a regal patina and a special ambiance.
