We have never seen a pair such as this which are identical and entwined together by a chain. We think perhaps they were part of a marriage ceremony, with the intentions placed inside and the hearts being given to the church to hang at a specific altar. They originate from a French collection and date towards 1890.
Each sacred heart is of gilded brass. There centers are delicately engraved with a scrolling "AM" for Marie with engraved palm fronds flanking. The doors open to reveal beautifully gilded centers. There is a heart shaped cut bit of paper in each one with the intentions; "Marie proteger nous Victor Marie and Marie proteger nous Francois Anna". The backs have a small ring into which the original chain is threaded through.
Each heart measures: 3" tall and 3/4" thick. They are in very good antique condition: they can be polished to a brilliant patina (we chose to leave them with the original patina). There are a couple of very slight indentations on the backs as is typical with use and age.
They have such an endearing presence and provenance and are truly a rare find.
