This beautiful cross would have been given/worn for a first communion. This example has an engraved inscription on the back, giving it an exact place in history, "R.E. 21 MAI 1930. It originates from Paris.
It is one of the finest and most elegant communion crosses that we have found. The mother of pearl cross is accented at each end by gilt/vermeil ormolu mounts. The mounts have elegant arabesques which support a small winged cherub's face (the cherubs are gilt over silver which gives them a special countenance). Christ is mounted at the center, an extremely detailed figure of gilded brass. A wide ribbed halo is mounted above his head as well as the banner ,"INRI". Both the front and back sides of these incredible end cap mounts are the same. There is a ring at the top for threading a chain or ribbon.
It measures: 3 1/4" x 2' (not counting the ring). The central Christ figure measures 1 1/4" long. It is in very good condition with no cracks or chips to the MOP and original brilliant patina to the mounts.
These crosses remained in families and were cherished throughout lifetimes. We love that this communion cross has provenance and a particular date recorded in history.
